Drone Strike Sparks Fire at Erbil Oil Refinery, Halting Operations

(MENAFN) A drone attack on Saturday hit the Lanaz Oil Refinery in Erbil, northern Iraq, causing a fire and forcing the facility to halt operations amid escalating regional tensions, according to reports.

A local source reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle struck the refinery, igniting a blaze within the facility. Operations were subsequently suspended to address the damage and ensure safety. No immediate information has been released regarding casualties or the origin of the drone.

The incident comes in the context of heightened hostilities following joint military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran on Feb. 28, which reportedly resulted in over 1,200 deaths, including the nation’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has carried out a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, which Tehran says are intended to counter American military presence, according to reports.
