Trump Extends Travel Ban to Additional African Nations
The updated restrictions, announced on Tuesday and scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026, enforce complete entry prohibitions for individuals from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Sierra Leone. These nations are added to a list of countries already under full restrictions, which includes Chad, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan.
Trump stated, “Foreign nationals from countries named in this proclamation have been involved with crimes that include murder, terrorism, embezzling public funds, human smuggling, human trafficking, and other criminal activity.”
Regarding Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the president pointed to the presence of terrorist organizations operating in the Sahel region. He specifically highlighted Burkina Faso for “historically” refusing to accept individuals repatriated from the US.
Sierra Leone, previously under only partial limitations, has now been fully prohibited due to its history of not taking back its nationals, with South Sudan facing similar restrictions, according to the proclamation.
In addition to full bans, the executive order imposes partial travel restrictions on 15 nations, including Nigeria and 11 other African states. Trump justified Nigeria’s partial restriction by citing “substantial screening and vetting difficulties” as “radical Islamic terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State operate freely in certain parts” of the country.
