OpenAI Refuses to Release Millions of User Chats in Copyright Case

(MENAFN) OpenAI moved aggressively Wednesday to shield 20 million anonymized user conversations from disclosure, urging a New York federal judge to quash a discovery demand in a high-stakes copyright battle with The New York Times and allied publishers.

The AI powerhouse characterized the sweeping request as a grave breach of user confidentiality, arguing that "99.99%" of the transcript repository bears no relevance to the copyright allegations at hand. OpenAI's chief information security officer, Dane Stuckey, asserted the demand "disregards long-standing privacy protections" and "breaks with common-sense security practices."

"To be clear: anyone in the world who has used ChatGPT in the past three years must now face the possibility that their personal conversations will be handed over to The Times to sift through at will in a speculative fishing expedition," the filing said.

The New York Times and co-plaintiff outlets maintain the logs are indispensable to establishing whether ChatGPT replicated their proprietary content—and to rebut OpenAI's assertion that journalists "hacked" the system to manufacture damaging evidence.

Central to the litigation is OpenAI's allegation that the company trained its flagship chatbot on thousands of copyrighted news articles absent authorization.

Stuckey reinforced the company's position with a broader rebuke: "Journalism has historically played a critical role in defending people's right to privacy throughout the world. However, this demand from the New York Times does not live up to that legacy, and we're asking the court to reject it," he added.
