UN announces new visit of envoy to Cyprus to meet Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot leaders
(MENAFN) The United Nations announced Friday that Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of Secretary-General António Guterres on Cyprus, will visit the island next week for meetings with both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Holguin will meet Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on September 12 and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar on September 15. She is also expected to hold discussions with representatives of both sides and other Cypriot stakeholders.
Cyprus has long been divided between Greek and Turkish Cypriots despite multiple UN-led efforts to reach a settlement. Ethnic violence in the 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots into enclaves, and following a 1974 Greek Cypriot coup, Türkiye intervened militarily, leading to the establishment of the TRNC in 1983.
Recent peace initiatives, including a 2017 attempt in Switzerland with Türkiye, Greece, and the UK as guarantors, have failed. The Greek Cypriot Administration joined the EU in 2004, the same year it blocked a UN plan aimed at resolving the conflict.
