Europeans Call for Greater EU Unity

(MENAFN) A growing number of European citizens are expressing anxiety over safety and security matters as geopolitical tensions intensify. According to a statement released by the European Parliament on Wednesday, 89% of respondents believe there should be greater cohesion among EU member states to confront global threats.

The latest Eurobarometer survey conducted by the European Parliament reveals that concerns linked to security now dominate public sentiment throughout the EU.

Conflicts occurring close to the EU top the list of worries, cited by 72% of participants. This is followed by terrorism (67%), cyberattacks originating from non-EU countries (66%), natural disasters intensified by climate change (66%), and “uncontrolled” migration flows (65%).

In response to these challenges, Europeans are calling on the European Union to take more decisive action.

Nearly nine out of ten respondents (89%) stated that EU member states should demonstrate stronger unity when addressing global issues, while 86% want the EU to project a more influential voice internationally.

Additionally, 73% believe the EU requires additional resources to effectively confront global threats.

The survey also uncovers a broader sense of unease regarding global developments. Over half of respondents (52%) reported feeling pessimistic about the world’s future, and 39% expressed doubts about the EU’s future.

Despite these concerns, personal optimism remains robust. Around 76% of those surveyed are confident about their own futures and that of their families.
